The Mark Dine and Tap in South Bend, IN, USA next to the University of Notre Dame

Just about a month ago I mentioned a South Bend, Indiana, USA restaurant that has vegan options.  At the time, Genki Husband was the only one that had enjoyed the food (minus the 1/4 sandwich from a doggie bag) so we intended to go back in later to check it out again together.  Sometimes restaurants are good the first time but then fall short the second.  This was not the case with The Mark though, hooray!  I love it when restaurants have consistently good food.  As mentioned before, the prices are a bit higher than say a fast-food joint but you pay for what you get and for me I’d rather pay a little extra for much better food.  Your health is important, so take good care of it.  We only get one body in life.  Check out our second experience at the link:

The Mark Dine and Tap in South Bend, IN, USA next to the University of Notre Dame Last time around G.H. wasn’t able to get photos inside since he was with a client and some colleagues for a business luncheon. Thankfully I was there this time to snap some photos. It was a quiet day so we were able to take some without too many faces being in the photos. This photo and the one above is of the main restaurant area. There is a small section past that purple pillar too but I’m assuming it’s for small parties as it is a bit more intimate. We were there at around 12-1PM on a weekday.

The Mark Dine and Tap in South Bend, IN, USA next to the University of Notre Dame Last time around G.H. tried the vegan SABLT but this time around we had 1 SABLT and this sandwich which is the black bean burger. It’s a simple burger made from well, of course, black beans. It has corn inside too. It’s topped with fresh avocado although I have to say it wasn’t ripe yet and was a bit hard to keep on the sandwich. It was good but it did not have as much flavor – but remember we tend to go overboard on seasoning in our household. I would say the chef has kept it very simple for those that do not like anything overpowering. It is served with the most delicious french fries. I’m a french fry addict – I would eat it everyday if I could and did not worry about being 5,000lbs in a month sitting in a hospital waiting for heart surgery. I would seriously go here just for the fries, they are that tasty. The burger was also on a pretzel bun, we were told it was vegan.

I would highly suggest this sandwich over the black bean burger because it just has more umami (mixed flavors to hit all senses). G.H. has an addiction to Sweet Potato fries after getting addicted to them in Berea, Ohio, USA at a place called Tree Huggers. While the Ohio version wins hands-down these are not too far behind. They are very tasty and do not need the ketchup at all. The sandwich was tasty just as last time.  It is again another safe call if you do not like much seasoning – it is for all types of people.

I topped the sandwich off with some hummus the next day for lunch. It was much better with the hummus. Mmmm

Our service this time around was a bit shaky – we did not see our waitress more than a few times.  It was one of the first warm days here so we actually had empty water glasses for more than 1/2 the visit.  The service was good, it was just hard for the waitress to keep up with the customers.  Maybe they should hire another waitress at lunch time?  Not sure.  She was courteous and helpful making sure we got everything served vegan but it was hard to get her to come on over.  Still, we will definitely be going back again.
